April 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to John J. of Minnesota as the April winner of a free TigerTail! Here it is installed on his King Quad ready for action and his winning story.

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

“I can think of several. I drag logs out of the woods and have to maneuver through the trees. This would allow me to stay on the machine when correcting course instead of getting off to make sure the rope isn't wrapped around the axle.

There also have been numerous occasions where another ATV has broken down (blown belts, out of gas, etc.) and have had to be towed back home or to camp. Either we had to use wound up straps (generally covered in mud) or a winch and tow backwards, either way risking possible axle damage due to straps wrapping around wheels and axles.

I can see many things that this would save time and possible further damage on as opposed to straps or cable. Not to mention the convenience of not having to try and roll a wet and muddy cold strap back up and sticking it in a box to finish the ride and then hope it's not a frozen block if you should need it again.”

May 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to Brian M. of Michigan as the May winner of a free TigerTail! Here it is installed on his quad.

We were 3 miles out from the trucks when my friends machine blew a drivebelt. Lucky we had a tow strap(he did not have a winch). It took us hours to get back due to fact that we kept running over the strap and had to move the second machine back to start off again. Then the strap broke from trying to tug it out from under the tire. I had to loop my winch cable under my machine then back to his. Great until the cable rubbed on the skid plate and frayed.

June 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to Oscar M. of Louisiana as the June winner of a free TigerTail! We'll post his quad pictures soon!

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

I was out riding with my 12 year old son, when I took my Foreman through a deep mud hole as my son watched. After I made it across I told my son to go around the large mud hole but he could not hear me because he had his helmet on, so he drove straight into the hole with his 110cc Red Cat and got stuck right in the middle. I was able to throw him my tow rope and get him out, but my rope was full of mud with nowhere to wash it off. I got more mud on me trying to put the rope away, than riding through the mud hole. A TigerTail would have been very useful. I just bought a Rincon today and now I don't even have a storage compartment for my muddy tow rope. Your product would be very useful now! Thanks for making such useful tool!

July 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to Matt M. of New York as the July winner of a free TigerTail! Here it is installed on his Grizzly ready for action and his winning story.

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

First of all, I wanted to tell you that this look's like a must have item for my kind of riding in Upstate NY. I am a member of GrizzlyCentral.com and that is where I first saw a mention of your product. Ever since that post, I have wanted one ever since. I just have been hit with some hard times like most of us have, so I just have to look for now... That being said, my story, although starting off bleak, had a happy and safe ending. In the spring of 2008 in upstate NY the ground was constantly soggy and the streams swelled with runoff. There is a stream crossing that we must go over in order to hit 80% of the good riding. Now normally, this stream is only 6-8 inches deep at the most, but on this day it was well above that. I was going for a ride with my son, Jake, who just got a new (to him) 90cc ATV. He has been riding ATV's for 3 years and this being his second ATV, I was confident in his riding skills and judgment. On this trip Jake went a little ahead of me because I wanted to stop and move a tree branch which was blocking the trail. He told me he was going to keep driving up the trail to the stream and I told him I would be right behind him I took about 3-4 minutes to hack away at the tree limb before I could get it off the trail, I put away my hatchet and drove on to meet up with Jake. When I got to the stream crossing, I found not the usual lazy little stream where you can see the crawfish scatter when you ride through, but a gushing stream which was so strong it was eating away at the banks and carrying branches and small logs in its wake. I instantly froze because I see that this water is high enough I wouldn't cross....where is Jake? I looked downstream and I see his blue helmet and chest protector just above the water and his overturned yellow ATV just beyond him by about 2 feet. I instantly realized that the normally gradual slope which allows us to enter the stream crossing was now a vertical drop of about 3 feet. What had happened was that Jake stopped on the edge of the stream and the embankment gave away. Having a 700cc Yamaha Grizzly, I knew that I had some significant weight and I could go into the water a bit to get closer to Jake. I backed up and drove down the trail a little bit where I was directly across from him. He was on the opposite side of the stream which was about 12 feet away holding onto a sapling with one arm and his new ATV with the other (letting go of either just wasn't an option to him) hahaha. I pulled my ATV directly across from him where luckily the embankment was still sloped. I realized that my winch was 2 feet under water and it would take too long to find it, free spool out and throw to him. So I grabbed a tow strap I always keep under my seat and first tied it onto my front rack and I tossed it to him. What does he do, he wants to hook it to his ATV first! hahaha...that's a true ATV rider. I yelled at him to hold onto it and I would pull him in first. He refused because he had a good hold onto the sapling, but the ATV was pulling away from him. Trusting his judgment again, I told him how to hook it onto his ATV. As he reaches to do this, his grip slips and he lets go of the ATV. I can see in his eyes that he wants to let go of that sapling and chase it, but he just looks at it slowly tumble down in the 3 feet of water and he looks over at me with those eyes that only a Father sees in his kids, and I knew I had to do something. I look back at Jake and he's there, with the water smacking him in the face. I quickly pull in the rope again and throw it to him. He ties off the rope to himself and lets the water take him a bit while I pull him back over to safety. We jump back on my ATV, back up and race down the trail which follows the stream. Lucky for us, the ATV was stuck on some debris only about 60 yards where we lost it. I drove into the water again and waded in far enough that I could reach the rack of his ATV. I pulled on it for a few minutes and righted it back onto it's tires and fumbled to tie a knot in the much colder than expected water. I get back over to my ATV, untie the tow strap off the front rack of my ATV and begin to tie it off to my winch. Wouldn't you know, as I reached down to tie it off, the debris gave way and Jake's ATV started its journey downstream again! The 25' tow strap very quickly reached its useful length. Now I was trying to pull the tow strap to provide enough slack to be able to tie it off to the winch. Jake, being a Cub Scout, knows a few things about knots so he let out a few feet of the winch (with synthetic rope) and tied it off to the tow strap instead of what I was planning on doing. All I did was wrestle the ATV and give him enough strap length to work with. We then were able to winch it to safety. Jake was safe but his new ATV needed a good flush, (actually 3 flushes of oil and fluids) and he was back riding. HE thought it was a wild fun adventure, but I needed to buy a new pair of underpants after that experience! Hahaha I can honestly say that I would use the TigerTail for getting out of some of the nastiest mud holes that I would compare with anywhere in the US. We do have a lot of muddy spots here. Your product is perfectly designed for just that use and I know that is what most people will be using it for. However, I think if I had the TigerTail with me that day, I could have much more easily and confidently handled the problem faster and safer than how I did. IT would have become a life saving tool as well. Thanks for listening.

August 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to Richard H. of Rochester, NY as the August winner of a free TigerTail!

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

“Boy could we have used one of these a few times this past winter, but there was one occasion that really comes to mind. Some friends and I were riding around a frozen pond doing donuts, and power sliding. Man was it fun! Well on the exit of the pond a friend of ours hit the slightly frozen creek that entered and supplied the pond with water. He buried his machine more than half way up. All we had were ratchet straps, and a rope to try and haul him out of the muck. Ratchet straps were snapping like 4 lb. test monofilament, and the rope eventually broke. We had to go back to the trucks, which were miles away, to get one of those big yellow ratchet straps, and it took two 700cc machines to yank this wheeler out of this muck it sank into. Not to mention upon getting out the built up force from yanking caused the machine that was stuck to ride over the strap and get it wrapped around his wheel tightening so much from pressure that it completely seized the wheel from turning. This looks like a good product!”

September 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to Jim P. of Illinois as the September winner of a free TigerTail! Here he is next to his Grizzly with his TigerTail ready for action!

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

“There have been numerous times that a TigerTail would have come in handy. My entire family loves to ride, and both my kids think that they haven't ridden unless they're buried in the mud. In fact they get mad when I clean the ATV's. They feel the mud coating is a testament to their riding. Anyway, I'm the boring old man that would prefer not to get entirely coated when I ride. Not that I don't like tearing through the mud, I just don't really want to be cleaning it out of orifices a week later. Your TigerTail would be great when I have to pull my son or daughter out. It would allow me to get in and hook them up without having to get off into the muck. It would also be great not to have to handle the mud caked tow strap getting it out and back up again afterwards. I'm sure I would take even more grief from the kids by not getting off the ATV, but I'd be a lot quicker getting them out and riding again too. The TigerTail is a fantastic idea that would benefit any ATV rider.”

October 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to James K. of Utah as the October winner of a free TigerTail! Here is his quad with his TigerTail installed and ready for action!

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

“Last year, while riding at altitude (9200') in Utah, we encountered a snow bank that was easily 4' deep. Before we knew it, we had plowed full on into the snow bank and were about 15' off the trail. If we had a TigerTail available, we could have saved about 5 hours of shoveling, digging and back breaking work trying to extract our Kawasaki Brute Force 750i by attaching this to another quad that was still on the trail but had no winch. What a great idea for those of us who like to push the limit of hard trail riding!”

November 2008 Contest Winner

Congratulations to Scott L. of Iowa as the November winner of a free TigerTail!

Tell us about a time when TigerTail could have helped you out in the past:

“I am the president of an OHV Club (www.tristateohv.com) in Sioux City Iowa. We currently have over 225 members and we do a monthly ride traveling to different parks. I have attended almost every ride. I soon found out that by being president my new job title is pulling people out of mud. I get very tired using my winch because it is not easy to free spool so I have been carring a tow rope. I can not put it away because within a few minutes I would need it again. So I usually wrap it around my back rack. Well when I go to ride the trails it usually starts dragging. In fact I didn't know it was dragging one day and it caught on a tree root. That slows you down really fast. I think this item would be a great asset and would be quite a bit quicker than my old way of doing things. I am sure that if the members saw me using it they would want to know more about it.”
